at Averau Mountain Hut

History and tradition

In German-speaking areas, the Krampus are devils who accompany Nikolaus (a folk figure derived from St. Nicholas of Myra) in the traditional parade along the country’s streets (Krampuslauf).

Ampezzo Krampus

In Cortina d’Ampezzo, as in most of the towns in the Old Tyrol, Saint Nicholas is celebrated on 5 December with the traditional parade.

Krampus on slope

According with the ancient Ladin and Tyrolean traditions, for the festivity of St. Nicholas at the beginning of December the “Krampus” (devils) will parade in the center of the villages, and also around Rifugio Averau.
