Family, mountaineering and hospitality<\/span><\/h2>\n

It all began on August 10, 1874 when Santo Siorpaes<\/a> reached the top of Mount Averau.<\/h3>\n

The exploits of Santo Siorpaes<\/strong><\/a>, one of the greatest mountain guides<\/strong> of the time and author of many first ascents in the most famous peaks of the Dolomites, are located between 1864 and 1881 and among them there are about thirty new routes of which 28 \u201cabsolute first ascents\u201d, not only in the valley of Ampezzo or in the surrounding valleys, but also outside the usual territory. Mountaineer Julius Meurer reports that in 1878 Santo touched the eleventh peak above 3000 m above<\/p>\n

The family started the restaurant business with Giovanni.<\/strong> He followed in the footsteps of his parent Santo and his brother Pietro, at twenty-one was allowed to practice as a professional mountain guide (1890). Thus begins a robust activity in the mountains, characterized by twenty first ascents and several repetitions of numerous classic itineraries then in vogue on the Dolomites Ampezzane and the surrounding area. During this period Giovanni opened many routes: the most famous is undoubtedly the route Dimai (August 1, 1901 A.Dimai, G.Siorpaes, A.Verzi, I. and R.von E\u00f6tv\u00f6s) on the south wall of the Tofana di Rozes. Thanks to the savings obtained by the profession of Alpina Guide, in the early twentieth century he was able to build a hotel in Cimabanche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the First World War<\/strong>, the hotel was destroyed and the family moved to Innsbruck far away from the conflict. Returning to Italy at the end of the war and thanks to compensation received for hotel’s loss, the family takes over some hotel activities<\/strong> in Cortina d’Ampezzo.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1939, Eugenio “Tati” Siorpaes,<\/strong>son of Giovanni, decides to move with the whole family (his wife Josephine and nine children) to Salzburg.<\/p>\n

At the end of World War the family returned to Cortina. Ado<\/strong>, Eugenio\u2019s second son, and his wife Augusta Pansolin inaugurated Rio Gere Restaurant<\/strong><\/a> in 1957, still run by his descendants.<\/p>\n

In 1980 Sandro Siorpaes<\/strong>, Ado’s son, and his wife Paola De Lorenzi<\/strong> purchased Rifugio Averau<\/strong> from the Finazzer family<\/strong>, opening it in 1982. Over time, their children, Matteo<\/strong> at the stove and Margot<\/strong> behind the counter, also joined the management of the Refugio. <\/p>\n

The year 2020 takes away a pillar of the Refuge and the family. Paola’s sudden passing marks a heavy blow, but one that spurs the family to continue on the path she set, come 2022 to mark 40 years of management<\/strong> with renewed vigor. <\/p>\n

As of 2024 Sandrone retired<\/strong>, remaining ever present as a mentor and helper, but passing the baton permanently to his children.<\/p>\n

A fresco on the terrace wall is dedicated to Santo and his exploits, where he greets customers and admire the magnificent panorama of its Dolomites.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The first building<\/strong> in the area was built in the late 1800s.<\/strong> It is a simple single-room wooden house with no foundations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1903 the Finazzer family<\/strong> built a two-storey masonry structure<\/strong> with a low attic, equipped with four 8-bed rooms. <\/span><\/p>\n

The refuge was opened under the German name Nuvolaupa<\/strong><\/span>\u03b2<\/span><\/strong>h\u00fctte<\/strong> (Nuvolau Fork Hut).<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1916, during the First World War,<\/strong>the Refuge was occupied by theItalian Army,<\/strong>which made it its headquarters on the front of the 5 Torri, sheltered from the artillery of Mount Lagazuoi.<\/p>\n

Around the Refuge, a field hospital <\/strong>was set up for first aid and other small wooden buildings for logistical purposes.<\/p>\n

In 1980 the Siorpaes family<\/strong> (Sandro and Paola) bought the unfinished building by brothers Walter and Osvaldo Finazzer and in 1982 the refuge was reopened under the name of Rifugio Averau.<\/strong><\/p>\n
